In two recent interviews, President Donald Trump admitted that there is no real<\/em> reason to continue his war against Iran. Instead, in remarks that revealed both a clear understanding of certain facts and a narcissistic way of framing them, he said he couldn\u2019t stop fighting now because of \u201cpublic relations\u201d and a vague need to \u201cfeel good.\u201d<\/p>\n

On a Fox News show on Friday, host Bret Baier asked Trump whether it might be feasible to retrieve Iran\u2019s enriched uranium. Trump replied that it would be very hard for either the Iranians or U.S. troops to get at the material because his attack last June\u2014a bomber raid on three sites encased inside a mountain\u2014left the \u201cnuclear dust\u201d (as Trump called it) buried under heavy granite rubble.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt was hit so hard,\u201d Trump said, \u201cthe mountain literally collapsed on it.\u201d<\/p>\n

This seemed to startle Baier. \u201cWhy isn\u2019t that good enough?\u201d the host asked. \u201cIf your goal was to set back \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is <\/em>good enough,\u201d Trump replied, \u201cbut you know what, it isn\u2019t good enough public-relations-wise.\u201d<\/p>\n

This wasn\u2019t a one-time gaffe. In a separate Fox interview, aired on Thursday, Trump said, \u201cWe have nine cameras on that site, on those three sites, 24 hours a day. We know exactly what\u2019s happening. Nobody\u2019s even gotten close to it.\u201d If the Iranians did try to dig out the material, Trump could bomb the sites again.<\/p>\n

One might infer, as Baier suggested in his Friday interview, that Iran\u2019s nuclear ambitions are thus effectively contained. But then Trump went on, \u201cI\u2019d just feel better if I got it, actually\u201d\u2014that is, if he somehow removed, or if Iran agreed to remove, the uranium. \u00a0Then he added, digging himself into a deeper hole: \u201cBut I think it\u2019s more for public relations than it is for anything else.\u201d<\/p>\n

Let\u2019s put this in some context. Trump has said he doesn\u2019t care that the war is hurting the American people\u2019s finances because it\u2019s also preventing Iran from getting a nuclear weapon. He has denounced all opponents of the war, including the Pope, saying that they are in effect condoning a nuclear-armed Iran.<\/p>\n

And yet, in two Fox interviews, he admitted that there\u2019s no way Iran can build a nuclear weapon as long as their enriched uranium is buried under a mountain, which we have under constant watch, meaning that, if they tried to dig out the material, we would bomb the mountain sites again.<\/p>\n

Trump has also said he might resume bombing if Iran didn\u2019t sign a peace deal that includes giving up its uranium. He never had a good reason for going to war\u2014or at least never articulated a consistent reason. Now that he\u2019s focusing entirely on the rationale of keeping Iran from going nuclear, it\u2019s clear that this isn\u2019t a good reason either\u2014he has in fact admitted as much.<\/p>\n

It would be good if Iran possessed no enriched uranium and no facilities for further enrichment. It would be good if a lot of scary things somehow vanished. But sometimes this is impossible or too costly, in money and lives, to pull off. This is where smart diplomacy, backed by a credible, proportionate threat of force, sometimes comes in handy. The United States has the resources for this sort of diplomacy well in hand. It has many ways\u2014besides perpetuating an illegal, devastating, and self-destructive war\u2014to keep Iran from obtaining a nuclear weapon.<\/p>\n

The only obstacle is Donald Trump, who thinks it would be better for public relations and his own feelings to pursue more violent options, even though that route has so far led nowhere.<\/span><\/p>\n
