The first thing the 1,000 men and women of the United States Naval Academy do, after hearing the artillery fire, is scream, tear off their shirts, and charge toward me.<\/p>\n

I have a painfully naive fantasy of being a war correspondent, but that\u2019s not what this is. Probably for the best. Even here in the relative safety of Annapolis, Maryland, an advancing armada of amped-up college kids overwhelms me. Thankfully, the class of 2029 passes by and descends on their true target: a 21-foot slab of granite and grease.<\/p>\n

I\u2019m among the first civilians from the general public on the Naval Academy\u2019s Yard since March. Access was restricted after President Donald Trump\u2019s strikes across Iran kicked off a regional war in the Middle East. The USNA, home to high-ranking current (and future) officers, hasn\u2019t been taking any chances. Some military bases around the country were telling soldiers not to wear their uniforms outside the wire.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Such a tense geopolitical moment is the incongruous backdrop for my (seemingly) lighthearted mission: witnessing a battalion of half-naked officers-in-training scramble over each other for one of the Naval Academy\u2019s biggest and strangest traditions, the Herndon Monument Climb. Each spring since the 1940s, the midshipmen fourth class (\u201cplebes\u201d) have gathered in front of the Naval Academy Chapel at the 170-year-old obelisk, which these days is covered in shortening. A white \u201cdixie cup\u201d (a small hat) sits on the spire\u2019s top, nearly two dozen feet from the ground. According to tradition, the plebes\u2019 grueling first year isn\u2019t over until one of them replaces the dixie cup with an officer\u2019s \u201ccombination cover.\u201d (The Navy really dislikes the word \u201chat.\u201d) Think of it like a team-building exercise from hell.<\/p>\n

Over the years, it\u2019s advanced from college stunt to annual tradition, from local spectacle to national news. It might be America\u2019s only Pentagon-sanctioned prank. And, given the last year under the Pentagon\u2019s civilian leadership, the Herndon Climb is beginning to feel like one of the few Naval Academy policies that hasn\u2019t been canceled or banned or removed for being \u201ctoo woke.\u201d<\/p>\n

Above all, it\u2019s simply compelling. For years I\u2019ve called the Herndon Climb America\u2019s next great spectator sport.<\/p>\n

For the 18-to-20-year-olds who will be climbing this morning, the spectacle caps off a year of change. College for most of us means freedom: freedom from parents, freedom to protest, to experiment, and, for me, to briefly wear a goatee. At the USNA, college means discipline. \u201cThey can miss a class if they want,\u201d said one midshipman. \u201cIf we miss a class without an excuse, you\u2019re missing a military order. You\u2019re missing something that\u2019s mandated by law.\u201d<\/p>\n

That would be a wild transition even in normal times. But as the first ones to serve under Pete Hegseth, the 2026 Brigade of Midshipmen (as the approximately 4,000 students are called) are entering a military of extreme politicization. The secretary of defense (who once turned down West Point to attend Princeton) spent his first 17 months firing senior officers, reinstating bans, purging books, replacing Annapolis\u2019 first female superintendent, and mocking the services\u2019 \u201cfat generals.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s it like to attend the U.S. military academies when military culture is upended? Or when your superiors criticize the supposedly weak female standards under which almost a third of your friends serve? The USNA is no liberal bastion (it\u2019s No. 8 among Princeton Review\u2019s \u201cMost Conservative Schools\u201d), but Hegseth has pissed off lots of veterans. Democrat Mikie Sherrill, an Annapolis graduate, won 2025\u2019s race for New Jersey governorpartly by flipping some areas where Trump won in 2024. Sherrill served in the Navy and piloted Sea Kings in the Middle East, and she ran in opposition to Hegseth\u2019s anti-DEI crusade. \u201cInstead of focusing on improving our readiness,\u201d she said, \u201cPresident Trump and Secretary Hegseth clearly only care about further infecting our military with partisan, culture war ideologies.\u201d<\/p>\n

All this goes through my mind while I watch the class of 2029 tackle Herndon\u2019s narrow stone sides in all their lard-caked glory. I like to think the late Comdr. William Lewis Herndon would approve of his memorial becoming a maritime mosh pit. It\u2019s made Herndon<\/em> one of the biggest names at a school that\u2019s seen 32 congressmen, the first American in space, one U.S. President, and NBA legend David Robinson. Heroism\u2019s great and all, but nothing ensures immortality like putting on a good show.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s what Herndon is: a show of teamwork and resolve. It\u2019s also a tradition so difficult, chaotic, and messy that right now it could be the perfect symbol for the country itself.<\/p>\n

An hour before the climb, I arrive at the Zimmerman Bandstand, where a troupe wearing Navy whites plays jaunty tunes. Alumni lounge in camping chairs around dozens of chatty college dads who look like Hank Schrader from Breaking Bad<\/em>. And to the east, I see a thousand plebes waiting to attack. A wide river of cropped hair, crisp T-shirts, and adrenaline stretching almost 500 feet to Herndon, where they\u2019re held back by an invisible dam about to burst.<\/p>\n

The school\u2019s new superintendent, Michael Borgschulte, an amiable lieutenant general with a Bronze Star and a pearly white set of teeth, steps onto the bandstand. It\u2019s just before 8 a.m. \u201cAre you ready to be plebes no more?\u201d he asks the midshipmen. The superintendent pays his respects to William Herndon, then cracks a smile and shares some climb history. \u201cThere is one class that has the record,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n

\u201cClass of 1975,\u201d yells someone from the crowd.<\/p>\n

\u201cNo sir,\u201d the superintendent says. \u201c1991. Which is my class!\u201d<\/p>\n

Later, I\u2019m told the officer is wrong. While there are different definitions of Herndon\u2019s \u201cfastest time,\u201d including ones clocked before grease was added, none were by the Class of 1991. I\u2019m confused. Surely someone had corrected the superintendent in 35 years, right? Or do I need to lighten up? The Herndon Climb is meant to be fun, after all. But if that\u2019s the case, why would a grown man feel the need to mislead a bunch of kids about how fast and strong and good at climbing it he is? Maybe this is the insecurity you get after the Pentagon starts negging its generals.<\/p>\n

One of the greatest days of his life.<\/p>\n

That\u2019s how James McNeal, class of 1986, described his experience completing Herndon. McNeal, author of The Herndon Climb<\/em>, went on to an accomplished career as a rear admiral, even serving as a SEAL Team supply officer, so I\u2019m surprised his greatest moment was an unorthodox rite of passage. \u201cIt was such an unbelievable feeling of joy and relief and just pure happiness that this plebe year was over,\u201d he told me.<\/p>\n

McNeal\u2019s book offers a likely origin story. In Gilded Age Annapolis, the walkway beside Herndon was among the few areas at the USNA where the then-all-male brigade could bring their dates. Plebes, prohibited from fraternizing with girls, celebrated spring commencement by marching across the walkways and climbing Herndon. \u201cKind of like a kid who says, \u2018I can now do something that I wasn\u2019t allowed to do before,\u2019 \u201d said McNeal. Irritated upperclassmen, the lore goes, attempted to stop the juvenile climbing with an unconventional weapon: grease.<\/p>\n

On the surface, this is simply the kind of weird tomfoolery you\u2019d expect from the early 1900s. At a time when the most exciting films were 10 seconds of a train, bored teenagers probably would<\/em> go berserk at the chance to loiter near an obelisk. But the upperclassmen\u2019s response to the plebes\u2019 antics reveals that, even 110 years ago, midshipmen were desperate to protect one of the few places in their Academy lives where they could go as wild as a typical college student.<\/p>\n

Minutes into the climb, the plebes roll their T-shirts up and throw them, like emcees at a ball game, toward the base of the monument, where other midshipmen use them to wipe off the grease. They barely finish before other mids start hoisting each other into a crude human pyramid. Uniformed marksmen spray the mob with cold water. There\u2019s slipping, stumbling, and many painful plummets.<\/p>\n

For students in a school that literally teaches tactics, they look batshit crazy. It\u2019s like Cirque du Soleil performed by unrehearsed 19-year-olds with skull tattoos, or some mad operation dreamed up by Col. Kurtz. Are their methods unsound? McNeal, who\u2019s on the Yard with me today,\u00a0 had a limited POV of his own climb: \u201cI ran up. I was on the base. I was there for all hour-and-forty-four minutes that we were there.\u201d Earlier, a kid in this year\u2019s climb had told me: \u201cThere\u2019ll be an email thread that goes around,\u201d but confessed: \u201cIt always ends up just being everyone running towards it with no strategy whatsoever.\u201d No wonder so many Annapolis grads wind up working in government.<\/p>\n

A small, female midshipman makes a bold ascent along the monument\u2019s southwest face. Cautiously hopeful cheers follow her. We might be witnessing history; no woman has ever been the plebe to swap the hats. (In earlier decades, women who tried might be pulled down or even threatened by the men.) Her shoulders strain as she pulls herself above her classmates.<\/p>\n

What emerges under her, if not a precision strike, is on-the-ground coordination. Larger midshipmen stay at the bottom, taking the brunt of the weight. Smaller plebes seem like the ones often climbing up. Those not in the huddle at all block the water with their bodies. \u201cIt all happens in the heat of the moment,\u201d a midshipman told me. I wish Hegseth were here to witness this, and not just because it\u2019d mean he\u2019d be away from a microphone. This motley pile, big enough to man a destroyer, is working together to literally support their sister\u2019s audacious rise. It\u2019s a small rejoinder to the secretary\u2019s inaccurate attacks on the military lowering requirements for women, and his insistence on \u201cmale standards only.\u201d (Requirements for combat roles were not lowered for women, and the only gender quota I could find was a now-repealed one limiting<\/em> women.) This climb, on the contrary, benefits from the attributes of individual students.\u00a0They seem to understand intuitively that a corps of manifold resources is more resourceful<\/em>. It\u2019s a strategy so fundamental it helped Napoleon win Austerlitz. This leaves Hegseth with only his opinion: \u201cI\u2019m straight-up just saying we should not have women in combat roles.\u201d<\/p>\n

The pyramid beneath the girl crumbles. She falls back to Annapolis.<\/p>\n

Like most of today\u2019s national news, watching the Herndon Climb unfold is equal parts meaningful and absurd.<\/p>\n

\u201cThat\u2019s why it\u2019s the greatest tradition,\u201d said McNeal. \u201cIf you think about it, it\u2019s completely silly to do it. But part of any military organization is taking a bunch of individuals and making them a team.\u201d<\/p>\n

Luke Schleusener agreed. \u201cIt\u2019s real funny to look at,\u201d he said. \u201cBut it\u2019s also super earnest.\u201d As a speechwriter to three former U.S. secretaries of defense and co-founder of Out in National Security, Schleusener sees the climb as an example of the Naval Academy\u2019s ability to build fellowship among individuals from divergent backgrounds. \u201cYou have to climb on top of each other, so you really have to be able to trust and communicate, and it\u2019s a great way to build together 1,110 people from 50 states and however many territories.\u201d<\/p>\n

Nobody tell Pete Hegseth all of that. After my visit to Annapolis, the secretary made his own trip to West Point and delivered a commencement address that largely whined about military wokeness. \u201cThe single dumbest phrase in our military history,\u201d Hegseth said, \u201cwas peddled in our Army only a few short years ago: Our diversity is our strength<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cUnity<\/em> is our strength,\u201d he added. \u201cThe call is \u2018Send us,\u2019 not \u2018Send he,\u2019 not \u2018Send she,\u2019 not \u2018Send they\/them.\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

The dumbest phrase in military history is Adolf Hitler saying \u201cLet\u2019s attack Russia in the winter.\u201d But, more pertinently, Hegseth\u2019s fear of the phrase \u201cdiversity is our strength,\u201d an idiom so blandly inoffensive you can probably find it embroidered on a hand towel at T.J. Maxx, reveals his willful misreading of \u201cunity.\u201d Students reciting Annapolis\u2019 \u201cMidshipman Ethos\u201d say they\u2019re \u201cunited by our oath to defend the Constitution,\u201d not their background. Unity by definition is composed of different (often diverse) parts. Without those individuals there would be nothing for the unity to \u2026 you know \u2026 unify. It\u2019s why we didn\u2019t name it \u201cthe States of America That Were Already United.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThe problem with the current environment is that it\u2019s teaching the opposite lesson,\u201d said Schleusener, whose organization advocates for queer national security professionals. \u201cThat you cannot, in fact, be a team with your Latino classmates or Black classmates or your LGBT classmates.\u201d<\/p>\n

At 2 hours and 17 minutes, I watch as the dixie cup is finally replaced with the officer\u2019s cover. The cannon fires once more, and 2029\u2019s plebes are plebes no more. A thousand midshipmen of the U.S. Naval Academy, to quote Commodore Matthew Perry, go apeshit.<\/p>\n

The superintendent brings the young man who completed the swap onto the bandstand. Lean and wet and smeared with grass, he introduces himself as Lincoln Hedberg from New Jersey. According to myth, Hedberg will be the first of his class to become an admiral. Right now, however, he looks like a kid who spent the morning messing around with his friends.<\/p>\n

On my way home, I\u2019ll discover Hedberg is the son of another Naval Academy alum. His mother graduated in 1994 and flew helicopter missions in the Middle East. If that biography sounds familiar, that\u2019s because Hedberg\u2019s mother is Mikie Sherrill, the Navy veteran and New Jersey governor. The commander in chief once called his mom a \u201cfake and corrupt radical left\u201d partisan. \u201cShe\u2019s terrible,\u201d Trump said.<\/p>\n

Hedberg doesn\u2019t bring any of that up, of course. Talking politics at a naval ceremony is beneath a midshipman.<\/p>\n

After weeks of hearing others talk about today\u2019s service academy students, I wanted to speak with the students themselves.<\/p>\n

Days before the climb, I met Grace and Crew from the school\u2019s Eighth Company. (They weren\u2019t speaking on behalf of the Navy, only themselves, Grace told me.) It was hard squaring the hulking mass of midshipmen who would nearly trample me at Herndon with these two polite teenagers prone to nervous laughter.<\/p>\n

We talked about their lives and what drew them to Annapolis before I asked how much attention they\u2019ve been paying to the news. First-year mids, Crew said, are actually required<\/em> to read two news articles daily, and to discuss them with their superiors. \u201cTo make sure we\u2019re up to date on what\u2019s going on in the world,\u201d he said. For them, the Iran war isn\u2019t just something to debate on the quad. It\u2019s their potential future. \u201cWe talk about it a lot,\u201d Grace said, \u201cespecially since now that the year is ending, our upper class that are graduating are going straight into conflict.\u201d McNeal has also noticed this: \u201cI have heard, scuttlebutt-wise and talking with a couple of kids, \u2018This Iran thing, is this really what I want to do?\u2019 \u201d<\/p>\n

The stories midshipmen seem less interested in, surprisingly, are the ones closest to home. \u201cWhen I\u2019m sitting with my girls and we\u2019re just talking about lunch, we have a \u2018No talking about Academy\u2019 rule,\u201d said Grace. Midshipmen crave occasional breaks from thinking about school, if they have breaks at all. \u201cThis experience here is so all-consuming that they really don\u2019t have the time to be sitting back and worrying about current events,\u201d said McNeal. In other words, Annapolis leaves little time to dwell on Annapolis.<\/p>\n

This reflects how Paula Neira, class of 1985 and a Desert Storm vet, recalled her focus at the USNA. \u201cThe larger world, if it doesn\u2019t directly impact the day-to-day,\u201d she told me, \u201cbecomes chaff that you kind of block out because you\u2019re so focused on trying to survive this crucible that you\u2019re in.\u201d This is how a shared experience like Herndon, weird as it looks, gains such importance. \u201cI have friends that I made when I was a midshipman that are my friends now 40 years later,\u201d Neira told me.<\/p>\n

For Neira, blocking out the larger world at the academy was sometimes a matter of necessity. Back then the midshipman hadn\u2019t yet come out as trans. Today she advises SPARTA Pride, a nonpartisan advocacy group for transgender service members and veterans. But in the 1980s that kind of advocacy wasn\u2019t available. \u201cMy childhood dream was to be a naval officer, and I knew what the rules were,\u201d she told me. \u201cI knew that if I was going to be in the military, I needed to just keep who I was in this little compartment.\u201d<\/p>\n

Forty years later, students not fitting Hegseth\u2019s cinematic definition of a \u201cwarrior\u201d are being forced back into that compartment, thanks to a ban on new trans recruits and the secretary\u2019s high-profile speech about \u201cdudes in dresses,\u201d \u201cgender delusions,\u201d and a vague \u201cmerit-based\u201d system.<\/p>\n

Hegseth\u2019s \u201cmerit-based\u201d line gets under Neira\u2019s skin. \u201cThe rhetoric of the military talks about merit,\u201d she said, yet its civilian leaders \u201crefuse to use the talent of people that they perceive are different or they perceive don\u2019t meet their worldview.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cThere\u2019s this big disjoint,\u201d she added, \u201cand it\u2019s to the detriment of the country.\u201d<\/p>\n

Before midshipman Lincoln Hedberg steps off the bandstand and the Herndon Climb ends, he takes the microphone and sings \u201cNavy Blue & Gold,\u201d USNA\u2019s alma mater. Hedberg\u2019s voice is quickly joined by the rest of the class of 2029, and despite myself I\u2019m moved by the oddly touching sight of a thousand muddy college kids from all over reverently singing a 103-year-old hymn, like some very disciplined version of Lollapalooza:<\/p>\n

Have proved the sailor\u2019s right to wear
The Navy Blue and Gold<\/em><\/p>\n

Those lyrics, by the way, were altered 20 years ago to be gender-neutral. Everyone here seems fine with that.<\/span><\/p>\n
