A federal judge just slapped down an attempt by the Trump administration to intimidate Minnesota Democrats. The ruling marries three broader stories of Donald Trump\u2019s second term: his efforts to politicize the Justice Department, his immigration crackdown, and his clashes with even Republican-appointed judges.<\/p>\n

Meanwhile, for your evening enjoyment, we\u2019ve got a review of a fire-breathing show, an advice column straight from Hogwarts, and more World Cup. But first, the news.<\/p>\n

Tell me more about this ruling.<\/strong><\/p>\n

In a unsealed on Monday afternoon, a federal judge blocked the Trump administration from subpoenaing several top Minnesota Democrats. U.S. District Court Judge Patrick Schiltz quashed the \u201cunlawful\u201d subpoenas, ruling that \u201coverwhelming evidence\u201d suggested they \u201cwere not issued to investigate, but to harass, coerce, and retaliate.\u201d<\/p>\n

What\u2019s the backstory?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Think back to winter, when waves of federal agents descended on Minnesota. The administration accused Gov. Tim Walz, Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey, and other local officials of impeding federal efforts to enforce immigration law and convinced a grand jury to subpoena documents from them. But in siding with those officials, Schiltz saw an ulterior motive. States aren\u2019t obligated to help the federal government enforce immigration law. And as Schiltz wrote, the Justice Department \u201cstruggled\u2014without success\u2014to identify a single plausible investigatory justification\u201d for its subpoenas.<\/p>\n

\n<\/div>\n

Tough break for Trump! But I\u2019m guessing this judge is a big-time liberal?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Not quite! George W. Bush appointed Schiltz to the federal bench two decades ago. Before that, Schiltz clerked at the Supreme Court for Antonin Scalia, a conservative hero. And as a University of Notre Dame law professor, he helped one of his students secure that same Scalia clerkship. That student was Amy Coney Barrett, who Trump later put on the Supreme Court. Small world! But Schiltz\u2019s conservative bona fides haven\u2019t stopped the administration from labeling one of his previous rulings a \u201cdiatribe\u201d from an \u201cactivist judge.\u201d He\u2019s also only the latest GOP-nominated judge to feel Trump\u2019s wrath. The president recently beefed with another Bush appointee who paused construction of Trump\u2019s beloved White House ballroom. And he labeled Barrett and Neil Gorsuch, two of his own SCOTUS nominees, \u201cfools and lap dogs\u201d for ruling against his tariffs this year.<\/p>\n

What happens next?<\/strong><\/p>\n

The Justice Department could still appeal Schiltz\u2019s ruling. But even if it doesn\u2019t, this case was just one way Trump is targeting Minnesota. The administration has withheld millions in Medicaid funding from the state, and Vice President J.D. Vance has urged the Justice Department to investigate Walz for allegedly failing to stop social services fraud. The state is also in a standoff with the administration over investigations into the deaths of Renee Good and Alex Pretti, two Minneapolis residents who were shot by federal agents during anti-ICE protests.
